Case Study: Design and Installation of MEL500L Sector Light at Port of Bridgetown Barbados - Efficient Navigation Solution

Posted on September 2nd, 2024.

We are proud to share a recent case study from Mesemar in collaboration with M-NAV Solutions detailing the design and installation of a sector light at the Port of Bridgetown in Barbados. This project highlights the innovative solutions used to enhance navigation safety and support the expansion of the port.

Project Overview:

The Port of Bridgetown, located on the southwest coast of Barbados, is the island’s main seaport and cruise terminal. As part of a significant expansion to increase berthing capacity, the introduction of Berth 6 has led to a reconfiguration of the port’s Aids to Navigation (AtoN). The existing Front and Rear Leads were obstructed by the expansion, which made them incapable of serving their original function as a leading line.

In response to this challenge, MSM and M-NAV Solutions conducted an in-depth study and proposed a solution: the installation of a single MEL500L high-resolution LED sector light. This decision was made following the IALA Guidelines to ensure optimal functionality and safety.

The MEL500L Solution:

The MEL500L LED sector light is a state-of-the-art solution offering:

  • Low consumption and high reliability, using advanced LED technology.
  • A day range of 4 NM, 15º horizontal divergence, and highly accurate sector configuration.
  • A reduced maintenance requirement, ensuring continuous operation for the Port of Bridgetown.

The MEL500L was strategically installed at a new location, refurbishing and relocating an existing tower previously used for the Rear Lead / Range. This relocation guarantees that mariners continue to receive accurate directional information while navigating the passage.

Challenges & Solutions:

  • Challenge: Replace two existing leads and provide directional guidance with a single light.
  • Solution: Install the MEL500L LED sector light in a new location, refurbish and relocate the existing tower for optimal placement.

Thanks to this innovative AtoN solution, the Port of Bridgetown now benefits from a highly efficient, low-energy lighting system, perfectly adapted to the port’s evolving needs. This improvement not only facilitates smoother navigation but also enhances safety for vessels entering the port.
